Man arrested in gunfire incident

Big Island police have arrested a 23-year-old Hilo man who allegedly fired a gun outside a bar in the Hilo industrial area last week.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened just before midnight on March 29.

A man, also 23, told police he was threatened by the suspect, who allegedly brandished a firearm and then fired a single shot near him. The suspect ran away, police were told.

On Sunday, police received a tip and arrested the alleged shooter without incident near the Banyan Drive peninsula.

Yesterday detectives turned the man over to special agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, who were expected to transfer him to the Federal Detention Center on O'ahu to face a federal weapons charge.



23 ARRESTED FOR DUI ON BIG ISLE

Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunken driving from March 27 to April 2, bringing the 2007 total to 333, compared with 291 at the same time last year.

Four of the drivers arrested last week were involved in accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

DUI roadblocks and patrols on the Big Island are continuing, police said.

So far this year there have been 548 major accidents compared with 666 during the same period in 2006, a decrease of 8 percent.



W. MAUI PARK TO CLOSE FOR UPGRADES

Launiupoko Beach Park in West Maui will be closed April 16 to 30 while crews install a new septic system.

The upgrade is required under new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, a news release said.

WOMAN HELD IN SAILBOAT THEFT

A 46-year-old woman was arrested Monday after she allegedly forged ownership papers for a 29-foot sailboat and began to sail it away from Honolulu Harbor without the owner's permission.

Police said they received a tip on the boat's whereabouts and located it with the help of the Coast Guard, state Department of Land and Natural Resources enforcement officers and state harbor police.

The woman aboard the boat was arrested on suspicion of second-degree forgery, second-degree theft and a contempt-of-court warrant.



RECYCLING CENTER CLOSED SATURDAY

Puhi Metals Recycling Center on Kaua'i will be closed Saturday so a large load of recyclable metal can be shipped to O'ahu.

Kaua'i County officials said the center will reopen Monday. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.



TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO CAR-THEFT ARREST

A 32-year-old woman was arrested early yesterday morning after police had stopped her in Hale'iwa for allegedly speeding and learned the car she was driving had been reported stolen from a 24-year-old man.

Police ordered the woman to pull over about 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Kamehameha and Joseph Leong highways.

After finding the car had been reported stolen, officers arrested the driver on suspicion of car theft.



BOYFRIEND HELD IN ALLEGED ABUSE

A 35-year-old Waipahu man was arrested about 8 p.m. Monday in connection with abuse reported by his 34-year-old girlfriend.

The woman told police that about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, her boyfriend punched her, lightly poked her in the ribs with a knife and threatened to kill her.

The woman also told police that about 8 a.m. Sunday the boyfriend slapped and punched her multiple times in Kalihi and also beat her at 8 p.m. Monday in Waikiki.

The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and two counts of abuse of a family or household member.



MAN ARRESTED IN SCUFFLE WITH POLICE

Police arrested a 30-year-old man in Kane'ohe Monday night after he allegedly assaulted two officers trying to arrest him on suspicion of violating a temporary restraining officer.

Police said that after officers reached the man's home on Kamehameha Highway about 6:30 p.m., he assaulted the first officer who tried to arrest him and then a second officer.

The two officers subdued the man and arrested him on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer.
