UH sweeps in softball

Dominant pitching propelled the University of Hawai'i women's softball team to a pair of 7-0 victories over host Santa Clara yesterday.

In the opener, Justine Smethurst pitched a three-hitter, struck out a career high 13 and did not issue a walk.

Brandi Peiler batted 3 for 4 and drove in two runs, Clare Warwick and Tyleen Tausaga each had two hits, and Kathryn Grimes doubled in two runs for the Rainbow Wahine.

In the second game, Courtney Baughman pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Tanisha Milca hit a two-run homer and Warwick hit a solo shot. Milca, Peiler, Kate Robinson and Alana Power each had two hits as Hawai'i improved to 37-8.

Angela Kabanuck batted 3 for 6 to lead the Broncos (7-32) in the doubleheader.


GOLF

HILO 4TH IN PACWEST

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team finished fourth yesterday in the seven-team Pacific West Conference Tournament at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz.

Grand Canyon won with a three-round total of 868. Notre Dame de Namur (875) was second, followed by Dixie State (880), Hilo (909), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (937), Hawai'i Pacific (961) and Chaminade (1049).

Notre Dame de Namur's Kory Storer won medalist honors with 68—207.

Hilo's Logan Goulding shot 68—216 to finish fifth and earn all-Pacific West Conference honors.

Spencer Adkins led BYU-Hawai'i (78—227, 14th), Chris Hohol led HPU (83—237, tie for 21st) and Kyle Neuman led Chaminade (74—248, 27th).
