The University of Hawai'i at Manoa has received a $240,000 grant to expand a program aimed at curbing underage drinking on campus. The grant was funded by leading beer maker Anheuser-Busch, and is payable over four years. It will go toward public awareness campaigns, and target freshmen in university dormitories.
"We are grateful for this gift from Anheuser-Busch and for the opportunity to expand our existing alcohol curriculum," said outgoing UH-Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan today.
The "Manoa Alcohol Project," which has been funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, uses social norms to convince underage students to steer clear of alcohol by pointing out the majority of their peers don't drink.
The program started in 2005, and its funding was expected to run out in July.
"This grant will further the work already under way at the university," said John Kaestner, vice president of consumer affairs at Anheuser-Busch.
