Lokahi Canoe Club to hold keiki paddling event

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

Lokahi Canoe Club will hold an instructional paddling event for keiki next weekend at the club's site along the Ala Wai Canal near the Kapahulu Public Library.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15, is geared toward youth ages 10 through 14, although paddlers of any ages are welcome to attend.

The goal is to give local kids and teens the opportunity to try out a new sport without any commitment or obligation.

"We hope that families will come down and see what paddling is all about," Shimi Rii, a club representative, said in a news release.

"It can be intimidating for kids to start a new sport and we'd like for it to be as fun and family friendly as possible."

Parents can also learn more about the sport, the time commitment, cost, and practice and race schedules. Coaches and parents of current Lokahi youth paddlers will be available to answer questions.

The event is free. Paddles and snacks will be provided.

Interested paddlers should wear comfortable clothing and be able to swim.
