Hearing on labor complaint against Big Isle newspaper

An administrative law judge in Hilo is scheduled to hear 13 unfair labor practice charges filed against the Hawaii Tribune-Herald newspaper, the Hawaii Newspaper Guild said today.The June 19 hearing, ordered by the National Labor Relations Board, will address charges that include the firing and suspension of reporters for protected union activity, banning union representatives from the Tribune-Herald facilities through a discriminatory application of building access policy, telling union members they couldn't wear union buttons, and coercing union members about union activity.
Representatives from the newspaper were given until April 13 to file a written response to the charges. The hearing is expected to last five days.
