Voyaging canoes leave Palau for Yap en route to Japan

Advertiser Staff

The voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu were pulling out of Koror harbor in Palau about 3 p.m. Hawai'i time today, on an anticipated two-day sail to Yap.

Na'alehu Anthony, who is captain on Hokule'a on this leg, said there were indications the wind was turning south, which would provide the canoes with a comfortable point of sail for the voyage.

Alingano Maisu will remain in Yap, the canoe's new home port.

Hokule'a will have a nearly complete crew change, with the next crew arriving Sunday from Hawai'i. Then the canoe will begin waiting for clear weather for a sail from Yap to Okinawa, on a goodwill voyage that will take it through several Japanese ports.
