Rose, Wetterich share Masters lead

Bloomberg News

Justin Rose and Brett Wetterich share the lead in the first round of golf's Masters Tournament at 3-under-par 69.

Rose, a 26-year-old Englishman, had a bogey-free opening round at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Wetterich, a Masters rookie at 33 from the U.S., had five birdies, including one at the 17th hole to tie Rose, and two bogeys. England's David Howell and David Toms of the U.S. are one shot back at 2-under, with Toms still on the course.

Top-ranked Tiger Woods, who is seeking his fifth Masters title, is four strokes behind after a 1-over-par 73. Woods reached 1-under with a birdie at No. 15, then made bogeys on the last two holes.

Defending-champion Phil Mickelson shot a 4-over 76 that matched his worst score in 15 Masters appearances. He was 5-over through seven holes.

"I just don't want to shoot myself out of it on the first day and I don't feel I did that," Mickelson said. "If I can go out and shoot 68 tomorrow and get back to even par, I'm right back in it."
