Japan's baby boomers rank Hawai'i No. 2 destination

Advertiser Staff

A recent poll conducted by the Japan Travel Bureau — JTB Corp — indicated that more than half of retiring Japanese baby boomers took a trip or plan to as a way to mark that milestone.

And the No. 2 destination they had in mind was Hawai'i. More wanted to go to Europe. Australia/New Zealand trailed the Islands as did other favorite overseas vacation spots.

Travel Journal International reported that more than 50 percent of baby boomers of retirement age — those born between 1946 and 1950) — took a trip — or are considering/planning a trip — to commemorate their retirement.

The poll said only 22.4 percent stated that they did not, or do not plan to travel after retiring. An overwhelming majority — 93.8 percent — said they plan to travel with their spouse. Outside of domestic destinations, the top overseas travel destinations among baby boomers include:

  • Europe — 30.8 percent

  • Hawai'i — 12.5 percent

  • Australia-New Zealand — 10.6 percent

  • Southeast Asia — 5.2 percent

  • North America — 4.5 percent

  • Mainland China — 3.4 percent
