6 'new era pink' anthuriums on display at plant show
News Release
HONOLULU – Ward Centers is pleased to announce that at its upcoming anthurium plant show and sale, a new anthurium varietal will be introduced to the public. The "New Era Pink" anthurium, cultivated by Dr. Adelheid Kuehnle and the University of Hawaii's Plant and Soil Sciences Department, represents the first successful effort to produce a bacterial- and blight-resistant cut flower.
The new anthurium varietal is glossy pink and will reach proportions of six and one-half inches by four and one-fourth inches. The plant's "keeping quality" – or length of time the flower is viable once cut – is 44 days, far exceeding previous averages of two weeks. Researchers worked for four years
on the project.
Six "new era pink" anthurium plants will be on display at Ward Centers' annual anthurium plant show and sale which takes place on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 starting at 10 a.m. Information and brochures about the plant and the project will be available to those interested.
"Anthuriums represent the top cut flower business in Hawaii," said Shirley Head of the Hawaiian Anthurium Society. "The implication for other varietals that remain susceptible to bacteria and blight is enormous."
In addition to anthurium plants, orchids, gardenias, haku lei, corsages and other floral arrangements will be on display and available for purchase. For those who would like to make their thumbs a little "greener," Ward Centers will also sponsor a free horticulture workshop. The annual plant show and workshop will take place at the Ward Warehouse Amphitheater. For
