TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"30 Rock" returns, 7:42 p.m., NBC. This is a promising night for comedy. NBC spreads five episodes over the six half-hours. All except "Earl" are new; most are "supersized." After spending some time on the shelf, "30 Rock" returns with a typical episode. It's odd and erratic; some moments fall flat and some make it all worthwhile. Another network executive (played by Will Arnett of "Arrested Development") is visiting. Jack is soon locked into defensive mode, worrying that the guy is trying to take away his power. The key battle involves ideas for an upcoming special. Jack prefers three hours of fireworks. Meanwhile, Tracy gets jolting news from a DNA test. And Liz and Pete adjust to being roommates.

"October Road," 9 p.m., ABC. Last week, there were some charming scenes between Phil, the self-imposed shut-in, and a bright-eyed pizza delivery woman (Lindy Booth). Tonight, they try a date. Meanwhile, Nick follows a rumor that his dad is dating, too.

OF NOTE

"The Office," 7 p.m., NBC. It's time to calculate the pay at the office. That, alas, gets Michael thinking — incorrectly, perhaps — about his own worth.

"Center Stage" (2000), 8 p.m., ABC Family. A terribly ordinary story about ballet students is brightened immensely by an appealing young cast and two musical-theater masters. The direction is by Nicholas Hytner, who has won two Tony awards; the choreography is by Susan Stroman, who has won one Tony for directing and five for choreography. Forget the plot flaws and enjoy the show.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Earlier, Greg shot someone in self-defense. Now the brother of that man has been involved in a shooting.

"Scrubs," 8:21, NBC. As Nurse Roberts' health deteriorates rapidly, staffers have different ways to spend their time. J.D. campaigns to be the godfather of Dr. Cox's baby.

"Andy Parker, P.I.," 8:54 p.m., NBC. This is why it's hard to be a private eye and an accountant. Andy was working on a criminal case, so his laptop was stolen. Unfortunately, that also contains his father-in-law's tax return, which hasn't yet been filed.

"My Name is Earl," 9:23 p.m., NBC. Earl tries to make amends with a stoner — played by Christian Slater — he cheated. Alas, the guy says the only way to make it up is to spend a week at an eco-friendly commune.
