Invasive tree spreads in Manoa

Advertiser Staff

State Sen. Brian Taniguchi is calling for a study of albizia trees in Manoa.

The invasive trees are prominent in the community and grow very large, but have a life span of 25 to 30 years, a shallow root system and are susceptible to wind damage.

Albizia trees are also found in many other O'ahu neighborhoods.

Taniguchi, whose district includes Manoa, introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 194, which asks the University of Hawai'i to study the prevalence of the trees in the community and how they could be systematically weeded out and replaced.
