Rainbows beat Sacramento State in 10th, 12-9

Kris Sanchez drove in four runs, including the go-ahead run on a double in the top of the 10th inning, to lead Hawai'i over Sacramento State, 12-9, today at Hornet Field in Sacramento, Calif., to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Athletic Conference series.

Tyler Davis (5-0) allowed a run in four innings for the Rainbows (24-11 overall, 5-3 WAC).

Mitch Lively (1-3) was charged with three runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Hornets (9-22, 4-7).

The Rainbows, who scored four runs in the top of the 10th, amassed 20 hits to the Hornets' 16. Brandon Haislet was 4 for 5 with a home run. Vinnie Catricala hit his first home run of the season.

Jorge Franco led off the 10th with a double off Lively. After Justin Frash fouled out to third, Haislet walked. Lively was pulled for Chris Mols. Sanchez then doubled to right to give UH a 9-8 lead. Matt Roquemore followed with a two-run double to make it 11-8. Mols was replaced by Billy Sinacori, who walked Catricala. Roquemore was caught stealing third as Catricala advanced to second on the play. Landon Hernandez walked and Eli Christensen singled home Catricala to make it 12-8. On the play, Hernandez was thrown out trying for third.

The Hornets got an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th.

Sanchez's two-run home run gave UH an 8-7 in the top of the ninth, but the Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Tim Wheeler led off with a single and took second on Gary Johnson's sacrifice. Blake Crosby's single to left put runners at the corners. Patrick Cummins came in to pinch-run for Crosby. Jeff Hannah grounded to second for a force, allowing Wheeler to score the tying run before getting picked-off at first to end the inning.
