Hawai'i Pacific University Associate Dean for Graduate Advising Deborah L. Nakashima has been elected to Region Chair for the Pacific Region 9 of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the university announced yesterday.

Nakashima will assume the role at the end of the NACADA Annual Conference to be held in Baltimore in October. She'll serve until October 2009.

The HPU news release said Nakashima will be responsible for representing and providing leadership to the membership of the geographic region, including Hawai'i, California and Nevada; facilitating networking opportunities and member recruitment; identifying needed membership services for the region; establishing and maintaining a regional governing structure; and overseeing the annual regional conference, state workshops and other professional development opportunities for region members.

Nakashima has been a communication and career skills instructor at HPU for more than 20 years. A Pearl City High School graduate and Kailua resident, Nakashima earned a master's degree in education from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa and is an active member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrar and Admissions Officers.
