Metal recycling effort under way at Waimanalo landfill

Advertiser Staff

A new metal recycling program that involves recovering ferrous metal from waste aims to expand recycling and increase the life of the Waimanalo Gulch landfill.

Waste Management of Hawaii, which operates the city landfill under contract, is using a large electromagnet to remove metals from the incoming solid waste.

The two-month pilot program gets under way this week.

The recovered metal will be hauled to Schnitzer Steel in Campbell Industrial Park for recycling.

In a news release, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said, "If this pilot project works the way we expect, this will become a permanent program."

The city already recovers metal from the H-POWER garbage-to-energy plant, where much of O'ahu's solid waste is burned to generate electricity.

The pilot program will recover metal that goes directly to the landfill, primarily from the city's refuse convenience stations and bulky item pickup, the city said.
