Hawaii Public Radio's "Challenge 2007," a spring pledge drive, will begin at 6:19 a.m. April 11 and continue until the goal of $657,000 is reached.
"It's definitely a very strange way to cover the costs of our programming for the next six months," said Michael Titterton, president and general manager of HPR here. "But we are independently funded. At this point, 63 percent of our support comes from private individuals."
Public radio stations under the HPR banner include KHPR 88.1 on Oahu, KKUA 90.7 in Wailuku and KANO 91.1 in Hilo, which streams classical music. KIPO 89.3 on Oahu provides news, information and world music.
Volunteers are sought for the pledge; call Gene Evans, listener services manager, at 955-8821 to man pledge calls on the phone banks.
