Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i volleyball team fought off match point four times before rallying to a 30-27, 30-22, 22-30, 27-30, 19-17 road victory over Long Beach State tonight in the Pyramid.

By winning their seventh in a row, the Warriors improved to 10-13 overall and 8-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. They entered in eighth place; only the top eight teams advance to the MPSF playoffs.

The 49ers fell to 11-14 and 6-13.

The Warriors blew leads of 22-16 in Game 4 and 13-10 in first-to-15, must-win-by-two fifth game.

But Lauri Hakala, who hammered 29 kills, scored on a crossing shot to tie it at 17 in the fifth game.

The Matt Vanzant, who added 10 kills, found the court with an off-balance swing.

The Warriors closed the match when Dio Dante and Brian Beckwith teammed to stuff Dan Alexander. Dante had 12 of the Warriors' 20.5 blocks.
