Homers lift UH to win in first game of softball twinbill

Tyleen Tausaga hit a three-run home run and Tanisha Milca added her second two-run homer in two days to lead No. 18 Hawai'i to a 7-3 victory over New Mexico State in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader today at Las Cruces, N.M.

Hawai'i is 39-8 overall and 10-1 in the WAC. NMSU is 22-19 and 4-4.

With Hawai'i leading 1-0 in the third, Clare Warwick reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman with one out. Kaulana Gould doubled to left-center field with Warwick advancing to third. Tausaga then hit her homer to left for a 4-0 lead. It was her 11th homer of the season.

New Mexico State scored a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Stephanie Herrera.

In the fourth, Kathryn Grimes walked with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Traci Yoshikawa. Milca homered to center field for a 6-1 lead. It was MIlca's 11th homer of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine have a school-record 62 home runs this season.

Justine Smethurst (15-6) allowed three runs (one earned), eight hits, striking out five and walking two for a complete game victory.
