Long Beach State hires Monson as basketball coach

Associated Press

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Dan Monson, who resigned after seven seasons at Minnesota, will become the basketball coach at Long Beach State.

Niall Adler, assistant director of media relations, confirmed the hire on Saturday.

Monson replaces Larry Reynolds, whose contract was not renewed despite a 24-8 record, the Big West Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament.

The 45-year-old Monson resigned in November after a 2-5 start at Minnesota. He was 118-106 overall and 44-68 in the Big Ten since the 1999-2000 season, joining the Gophers after leading Gonzaga to the Elite Eight.

At Gonzaga, he was 52-17 in two seasons.

Athletic director Vic Cegles said he was thrilled to have Monson leading the team.

''We've hired a good coach and a good guy,'' he said.
