Experience 'BLUE'

Advertiser Staff

“Electric Blue” by the IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre wraps up tonight at the Hawai'i Theatre before heading out to tour California. The eco-minded multimedia show involves aerial acrobatics, a capella singing, film, lots of modern dance and — did you hear? — about eight tons of sand.

It's a big night for IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre, that ever-intriguing troupe led by founder/artistic director Cheryl Flaharty. Why? Curious butoh lovers want to know:

  • IONA's "Electric Blue" production is in its finale performance at the Hawai'i Theatre before it hits the road for six shows in California.

  • The nearby Mercury Lounge is exhibiting the works of five artists who were inspired by the dance ensemble. It's titled, appropriately, "Mused by IONA."

Isle dance and theater fans will recall that the ecologically minded "Electric Blue" was previewed on beaches around O'ahu and made its full debut about a year ago at the Hawai'i Theatre. The production's multimedia approach includes a script by local author Victoria Kneubuhl, film footage by Sergio Goes, a capella singing, much modern dance and aerial acrobatics.

Did we mention the eight tons or so of sand hauled into the theater? All to convey messages about global warming and other environmental issues in an otherworldly atmosphere.

"Mused by IONA" made its debut at last night's First Friday gallery walk and continues through the month. The multimedia collection — collages, paintings, photographs — includes works by Ginger Royal, Rebecca Horne, Mary Farkash, Stan Zisk and IONA dancer Chandra Miars.

Tonight there's a muse-and-artist party at Mercury, and while muses and artists will be on the scene, it's open to all.
