UH softball shuts out New Mexico State, 6-0

Tanisha Milca hit a two-run home run and Kate Robinson pitched a four-hit shutout to lead No. 18 Hawai'i to a 6-0 victory over New Mexico State yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference softball game at Las Cruces, N.M.

Hawai'i is 38-8 overall and 9-1 in the WAC. NMSU is 22-18 and 4-3.

Robinson (12-0) recorded her eighth shutout of the season. The junior from Kailua struck out two and walked none in a complete-game performance.

Milca and Brandi Peiler each went 2 for 3 and Tyleen Tausaga 2 for 4 for the Rainbow Wahine.

Kaulana Gould reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Tausaga to give UH a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

In the third, Kathryn Grimes singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Traci Yoshikawa. Milca, a sophomore from Kailua, then homered to right field for a 3-0 lead.

UH scored three runs in the seventh with an RBI single by Gould, a sacrifice fly by Robinson and an RBI single by Peiler.

UH moved up three spots from No. 21 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/USA Today Top 25, released on Wednesday.

UH-HILO SWEEPS PAIR

Charity Senas hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as No. 14 Hawai'i-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 5-4, yesterday in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball sweep at UHH Softball Field.

Holly Bjork's three-run homer in the top of the fourth gave BYUH a 4-1 lead, but the Vulcans tied the game with three runs in the sixth, and Senas led off the seventh with her blast.

In the second game, the Vulcans broke a 3-3 tie by scoring 14 runs in the fourth en route to a 17-3 win. UH-Hilo sent 18 batters to the plate in the fourth, and hit three home runs, two by Kanani Numata and a grand slam by Meghan Jost.

UH-Hilo is 30-7 overall and 13-1 in the PacWest. BYUH is 15-20, 5-9.


GOLF

KONO, KIM FOURTH

Stephanie Kono and Kimberly Kim are tied for fourth place, two strokes off the lead after the first round of the ReBath Heather Farr Classic yesterday at Mesa, Ariz.

Kono, of Honolulu, and Kim, who moved to Arizona from the Big Island, each shot 70s at the American Junior Golf Association event at the par-71 Longbow Golf Club.

Rachel Morris, of Carlsbad, Calif., leads after shooting 68.

Honolulu's Chan Kim (72) is tied for 29th in the boys division.

In other events, Kahului's Elyse Okada (78) is tied for 15th, nine strokes off the lead after the first round at the Ping Junior at Woodlands in Texas.

Also, Hawai'i's Kristina Merkle (86) is 42nd, 17 strokes behind the leader after the first round at the Mizuno Junior at Braselton, Ga.
