A motorcyclist killed in an accident on the Moanalua Freeway near the Fort Shafter overpass has been identified as 45-year-old Blaise Villa, a former all-star basketball player at Maryknoll School who helped the Spartans reach the 1981 state championship game.

Police said Villa, of Honolulu, was driving a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle Friday night when he was struck by a car driven by a 49-year-old Honolulu man.

Both were in the same lane when the car began to switch lanes to the left, then suddenly veered back to the right and hit Villa, police said. The motorcycle then hit an embankment and a tree.

The death was the 27th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu, compared with 24 at the same time last year.
