"Design Star" David Bromstad recently wrapped up shooting his new HGTV show, "Color Splash." Bromstad, 33, took a break from moving into his San Francisco digs to chat.

Q. Has winning "Design Star" changed your life?

A. Oh, my gosh, I was a starving artist, but I was happy. Now I go to work and 18 people help me and cameras are in my face, and I kind of love it.

Q. Will you appear on the next "Design Star"?

A. A little bit, but that's all I can tell you.

Q. Alice Fakier was your closest competitor. Do you guys keep in touch?

A. Alice! I love her. Yes, I just talked with her a few days ago.

Q. Will Alice be visiting "Color Splash"?

A. I hope so. First season, no Alice, but we just started the second season, so we will see.

Q. What's your personal style?

A. Clean. White on white on white with pops of color. That's how my apartment in Miami is. Unfortunately, I don't have time to have personal style.

Q. A lot of people's homes don't fit these categories. Will you work with their styles?

A. I would never give someone who loves French country something I like. One thing I like to add is architectural detail, things that are graphic. You can do that if you are modern or colonial or country.

Q. What is the most important rule of color?

A. If you love, love the color, edit yourself. Don't buy everything that color; your eyes are going to go crazy. Keep everything neutral, and accent with your color.

Q. The tattoo on your left arm, is there a story behind it?

A. They are Chinese characters that mean "artist" and "painter." That tattoo reminds me of who I was back then. I just got one on my chest. It's a tribal tattoo, but it's kind of my badge for winning "Design Star."

Q. I have to ask. Will you be taking the shirt off on "Color Splash" as much as you did on "Design Star"?

A. Probably two or three times. Not an overwhelming amount, but it keeps people interested (laughing).

Q. You have made reference to being out. Are you in a relationship?

A. I'm single, but there's always a chance. If you can catch me when I'm not working!
