'Aiea's Randy Castillo was a bulldog and workhorse yesterday against Pearl City.

The 6-foot-2 junior right-hander pitched a five-hitter with five walks and six strikeouts as host 'Aiea beat Pearl City, 5-3, in a battle of baseball unbeatens yesterday.

'Aiea improved to 5-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division; Pearl City dropped to 4-1.

Castillo threw 69 of his 121 pitches for strikes and stranded eight runners, six in scoring position.

"My arm still feels good," Castillo said. "I could pitch some more if I have to."

In the seventh, he put two runners in scoring position with two outs, but got a pop out to first baseman Steele Asing to end it.

"I know the kind of character he has and the kind of heart he has," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. "I know his pitch limitations and he was well within that. He's a very resilient pitcher."

Castillo allowed runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Only one out was recorded by an outfielder, and he was aided by two ground-ball double plays.

In the third, Castillo issued three walks and allowed an RBI double to Ryno Acosta. The Chargers had the bases loaded, but Castillo got a fly out to left fielder Casey Yara to end it.

"He pitched a darn good game," Pearl City coach Mel Seki said. "Give him credit. He was tough when he needed to be."

Na Ali'i scored three runs in the second on four hits and an error. Brenan Sato led off with a single to center off Bryson Nakamura, and was sacrificed to second by Ryan Murakami.

After a ground out, No. 9 hitter Ricky Itagaki bunted the ball to the right of the mound, and Nakamura fielded it and tried unsuccessfully to dive and beat Itagaki to the bag. Since Nakamura was on the ground (he tried to tag first base with the ball in his glove), Sato kept running and scored as Nakamura's throw — from the seated position — got past the catcher.

Itagaki advanced to second on the throwing error, and scored on Yara's double to left. Cody Aquino followed with a run-scoring single to center.

'Aiea added two runs in the fifth. Murakami led off with a walk and reached third on a hit-and-run single to right-center by Tyler Abasial, who advanced to second on the throw to third. Itagaki bunted to the first baseman, who thought about throwing home and threw too late to first. Yara bunted Itagaki into scoring position, with Abasial holding at third, and Aquino followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Abasial.

'Aiea had seven singles among its eight hits.

"Offense, I can tell these guys that's the last of our worries," Kato said. "We bunted a lot, we do a lot of hit-and-runs. We don't have a very potent offensive lineup. Our whole focus is on pitching and defense. That's all we work on. We cannot give up runs, and we scratch and claw for one run here, one run there."
