MAUI

NORTH AMERICA

GEORGIA

Atlanta, May 11-13, Sweet Auburn Springfest. Themed "Linking the Global Family," this street fair is one of the largest in the nation, a multi-cultural extravaganza of music, art, film, health, sports and food. Held in the Sweet Auburn Historical District and organized by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, it attracts between 350,000 and 500,000 people over the three-day period. OREGON

Portland, May 31-June 17, Portland Rose Festival. Celebrating its centennial this year, the Portland Rose Festival began as a celebration of the city's official flower but now is a wide-ranging cluster of events, including the Floral Parade, street fairs, concerts, a car race, dragon boat races, appearances by tall ships and more. www.rosefestival.org

WYOMING

Cheyenne, July 20-29, Cheyenne Frontier Days. Billed as the world's largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration, this 19-day event includes not only conventional rodeo events but country and western and rock concerts, a Western art show, an Indian village and carnival. www.cfdrodeo.com

CANADA

Montreal, Quebec, July 12-22, The Montreal International Comedy Festival. "Just for Laughs" is the theme of this celebration of the chuckle, which includes appearances by dozens of comedians in different venues and a gala hosted by Howie Mandel. www.justforlaughs.ca

ARGENTINA

Rio de Janeiro, Feb. 2-5, 2008, Carnaval. They say the Rio is the place to experience Carnaval (as it's spelled in Portuguese), a four-day, pre-Lenten festival of music, dance, exhibitions and pageantry. http://rio-carnival.net

BRITAIN

Braemar, Scotland, Sept. 1, The Braemar Royal Highland Gathering and Games. This annual event, held the first Saturday of September for more than 100 years, includes highland games competitions, pipe bands, hill race, gathering of the lcans. FRANCE

Paris, July 14, Bastille Day. France's most important national holiday is celebrated with a huge military parade down the Champs Elysees, numerous balls and dancing in Bastille square, an outdoor Gay Ball, fireworks and an immense public picnic. http://us.franceguide.com

Sapporo, Feb. 5-11, 2008, 59th annual Sapporo Snow Festival. Every winter more than 2 million people visit Odori Park in Sapporo on Hokkaido to see the spectacle of giant snow sculptures. www.snowfes.com/english

AUG. 4-5: LAYERS OF MAUI ONION FUN

Like the vegetable it celebrates, the free Whalers Village Maui Onion Festival is a multi-layered event spread over two days. There's the 60-second Maui onion eating contest. There's the famed Maui onion cooking contest. There are chef demonstrations and onion-themed games. There are produce and food product displays and, of course, food to eat — especially those deep-fried onion rings prepared by the Maui Onion Growers Association. This year's event is the 18th annual, set for Aug. 4 and 5 at Whalers Village in Ka'anapali.

JULY 14 -AUG. 4: MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Lake Tahoe Music Festival, July 14-Aug. 4, has announced its 2007 lineup — eight concerts in three scenic venues throughout Lake Tahoe featuring such acts as Kenny Loggins, David Benoit, Craig Chaquico and David Sanborn as well as the Lake Tahoe Music Festival Orchestra under the baton of maestro Timm Rolek. JUNE 8-10: SIPPING IN SUN VALLEY

The Sun Valley-Ketchum announced this week it's inaugurating an annual Food & Wine Festival June 8-10 featuring such foodie stars as Cat Cora, chef Corey Schreiber of Wildwood Restaurant, Katie Chin of Cooking Light and "The Raw and The Cooked" author Jim Harrison, along with seminars, a champagne brunch and vintner dinners. www.visitsunvalley.com
