Waikiki wastewater bypass work affects street parking

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

Street parking along Kai'olu Street in Waikiki will not be available for the next few weeks, as contractors have resumed jet grouting as part of the Beachwalk Wastewater Emergency Bypass project.

The jet grouting will be done from sunrise to sunset. The work will also include some tree trimming, as the jet grouting machinery will be centered near the sidewalk on the Diamond Head side of Kai'olu Street.

Jet grouting strengthens the subsurface soils so workers can safely build an underground tunnel that will hold a new state-of-the-art wastewater pipe. Microtunneling avoids the conventional trenching of an entire street.

At the corner of Kai'olu and Kuhio streets, workers are digging a second pit, which will eventually be 28 feet deep. That will accept the second microtunneling line that will be built later this month, launching from the makai pit near the Ala Wai Community Gardens. It will be placed 1,100 feet under the Ala Wai Canal and Kai'olu Street, parallel to the first line that has already been installed.

Contractors will begin testing that first line this week using canal water. That and the second line will be hooked up to the Beachwalk Pump Station this summer, completing a major portion of the project.
