UH's Tausaga, Smethurst earn WAC softball honors

Hawai'i's Tyleen Tausaga and Justine Smethurst were named Western Athletic Conference hitter and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the third time this season, the conference announced today.

Last week, Tausaga, a senior from Honolulu, went 2 for 3 with a RBI double against Santa Clara. In a conference series against New Mexico State, she went 6 for 8 (.750), including two home runs.

Smethurst, a sophomore from Victoria, Australia, was 2-0 last week a 0.50 ERA. he fired a three-hit shutout over the Broncos and had a career-high 13 strikeouts. It was her seventh shutout of the season. She struck out 11 of 12 batters between the second and fifth innings. In her second start of the week, Smethurst threw her second complete game to defeat New Mexico State, 7-3. She allowed only one earned run off a walk and three consecutive infield singles.

The Rainbow Wahine, ranked No. 18 in the nation, are 40-8 overall and 11-1 in the WAC.
