Volunteers sought for Lahaina Bypass Now effort

The Maui News

LAHAINA – The grass-roots group Lahaina Bypass Now is seeking volunteers for its Walking-Biking Committee, a group that will seek to establish alternatives to vehicles for getting around West Maui.

The options of trails and paths for bicycling and walking is one of several components of the Lahaina Bypass Now effort to develop a regional transportation system, said Theo Morrison, executive director of Lahaina Bypass Now. "Oftentimes, the topic of transportation focuses on cars, and pedestrians and bicyclists are forgotten. But this committee will allow visitors and locals alike to have an alternative to get to their destination."

Walking-Biking Chairman Harold Hyman told The Maui News that the committee is focusing for now on establishing a coastal path for walking from Honokowai to Banyan Tree Park in Lahaina town, and for a bicycle path from Puamana to Olowalu.

"But our long-term goal is to eventually create interconnecting walking and biking paths from Kapalua to Olowalu, supported by an effective and efficient public transportation system," Hyman said.

Volunteers are needed to help with a range of needs, from applying for funding to designing and installing the paths to be developed, as well as to work with the state and county.

Individuals interested in signing up should call Lahaina Bypass Now at 667-2516 or visit www.lahainabypassnow.com. E-mails may also be sent to Hyman at mauiharold@aol.com; or Don Lehman at delehman@earthlink.net.
