Contraflowed traffic resumes 3 p.m. near rockslide site

Advertiser Staff

The stretch of Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay that was struck by a rockslide early Saturday will be closed to traffic between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. for debris removal and repair work.

The area will open again for contraflowed traffic from 3 to 7 p.m.

The Department of Transportation is hoping to extend the contraflow operation to 24 hours a day starting tomorrow. Tentative plans call for a temporary protective fence and barrier to be built during the next two to three weeks, allowing the highway to reopen to two-way traffic.

Repair work for permanent fencing and barrier will take up to about six months.

DOT crews yesterday continued to remove boulders. Since Saturday, crews have removed 70 truckloads of rock.
