North Shore contraflow lane now open 24 hours a day

Advertiser Staff

Crews will open a 24-hour contraflow lane at noon today on Kamehameha Highway at the site of a massive rockslide near Waimea Bay.

The slide happened Saturday, shutting down both lanes of the highway. State Transportation Department crews had been manning a contraflow lane during peak rush hours, but said the lane would remain open for 24 hours starting today at noon.

The highway will continue to be one lane in the area for at least two weeks while crews install a temporary fence along the highway to guard against any future slides. A permanent fence will come later in the year. Officials did not have details on the costs of the project.
