Revived Hawaii Winter League has first major leaguer

Advertiser Staff

It didn't take long for the revived Hawaii Winter Baseball to have its first big leaguer.

Former Waikiki BeachBoys pitcher Rick Vanden Hurk made his major league debut today as the starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins, who hosted the Milwaukee Brewers at Dolphins Stadium in Miami.

Vanden Hurk pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run (earned) and five hits, striking out five and walking three. He was pulled after a rain delay with the score tied at 1.

Vanden Hurk was promoted from Double-A Carolina of the Southern League as a replacement for Ricky Nolasco, who was placed on the disabled list, according to MiamiHerald.com. The native of The Netherlands was 2-2 with a 3.60 earned run average with the BeachBoys. He led the league with 63 strikeouts while walking 17 in 40 innings, which was third-highest in the league.
