Ruptured sewer line repaired in Kane'ohe

Advertiser Staff

City crews at 1:46 p.m. today repaired a rupture in a sewer main that spilled 11,250 gallons of wastewater into Kane'ohe Bay.

The break, in an 8-inch iron force main, was discovered by a city employee at the Ka Hanahou wastewater processing plant at 8 a.m. today. A force main is a pipe that moves wastewater under pressure, the city said in a news release.

About 11,250 gallons of wastewater went into the bay before workers contained the spill at 9:15 a.m.

Tanker trucks were used to divert and haul wastewater from the area while under repair, the news release said.

Warning signs have been posted advising people to stay out of waters fronting Pohakea Point to Coconut Island, and South to Mahalani Circle.

The force main will be replaced by the end of the year with a more durable 8-inch polyethylene pipe, the city said. A contractor was given permission on March 5 to proceed with the work and materials are being shipped to O'ahu.
