The general manager of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Chris Tatum, was recently named "2007 Marriott International General Manager of the Year Award" at the company's annual conference in San Francisco.

The award is given to a general manager "who has demonstrated exemplary and courageous leadership, made extraordinary contributions to business and serves as a role model for professional expertise, innovation and high achievement," officials said

Born and raised in Hawai'i, Tatum graduated from Radford High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree in hotel and restaurant management from Michigan State University. During his leisure time, he enjoys golfing and spending time with his wife Peg and their two children.

Tatum said the award represents efforts of the entire team at the 1,310-room resort. He was praised specifically for improving guest satisfaction and fostering goodwill in the community through Marriott's Spirit to Serve Our Communities corporate program.

He was named general manager of Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa last March. Tatum began his career with Marriott in 1981 and has held management positions in 13 hotels throughout the United States and Asia.
