Hawai'i tops millionaire list for second straight year

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i has more millionaire households per capita than any other state for a second consecutive year, according to a marketing firm that studies affluent consumers.

About 6.8 percent of households here broke the millionaire threshold, said Phoenix Affluent Marketing Service. Following the Aloha State in the ranking were New Jersey and Maryland.

"The high cost of living combined with the affluent lifestyle gives Hawaii the edge in the ratings," states Phoenix's David M. Thompson, Vice President and Managing Director, Affluent Practice, in a news release.

"However, staying a millionaire is another story, these households invest their money wisely and have profited from these decisions. Getting on top and staying on top are two different tasks."

Phoenix Affluent Marketing claims to have the largest syndicated study of the affluent market through an ongoing survey of households throughout the U.S.

Households with more than $1 million in investable assets were included in the millionaire category.
