Heavy rain keeps Hokule'a in Yap

Advertiser Staff

The voyaging canoe Hokule'a remains in Yap because of bad weather, crew members reported late Tuesday night.

The Hokule'a and escort boat Kama Hele have run into 100 percent cloud cover and heavy rain, crew members said via e-mail.

If it clears, they'll resume the voyage today.

The Hokule'a has taken on several new crew members in Yap as it prepares to embark on what's expected to be a 12- to 14-day passage to Okinawa.

After Okinawa, the canoe is to visit Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Oshima, Hiroshima, Uwajima and Yokohama.
