Building where fire happened inspected in 2001

Advertiser Staff

The most recent inspection of a high-rise condominium where a blaze gutted an apartment yesterday showed three areas of concern that were later addressed by management, fire officials said today.

During the last inspection, on Aug. 6, 2001, the building's management was asked to cut back brush that could block access to the buildings for firefighters, to test the building's alarm system and to test the water pressure in the building's emergency water pipes.

The building complied with the requests, according to the fire department.

Five people suffered smoke inhalation when a fire broke out in an apartment on the 25th floor of the The Kapiolani Manor, at 1655 Makaloa St.

Yesterday's fire was the result of unattended lit candles, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

The fire department is not responsible for inspecting private residential units.

A 96-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and a 78-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
