Advertiser Staff

A panel discussion on the future of Okinawa is set for today at the University of Hawai'i.

The event runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Moore Hall 319 at the Manoa campus. Panel members will discuss issues facing Okinawa and its people, including language and cultural changes, conflicts with the U.S. military, economic challenges and social concerns.

The talk comes as the university is trying to establish a Center for Okinawa Studies at the UH-Manoa. Panel discussion members include Gregory Smits, associate professor of history and religious studies at Pennsylvania State University, Joyce Chinen, professor of sociology at UH-West O'ahu, and Kyoko Hijirida, professor of language at UH-Manoa.
