5 college rowers rescued after boat capsizes

Associated Press

FALLS, Pa. -- Five members of a women's rowing team from the University of Scranton were treated for hypothermia after their boat capsized in the frigid Susquehanna River today.

Several boats were in the water when one capsized between 6:30 and 7 a.m. Larry Bundy Jr., an assistant regional supervisor with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, estimated the water temperature at the time at around 42 degrees.

The five women were pulled from the water and taken ashore by members of the men's team, said Vincent Carilli, the school's vice president for public affairs. The women were taken to hospitals for treatment of hypothermia and later released, Carilli said in a statement.
