Red Sox-Mariners game blacked out in Hawai'i by ESPN2

Advertiser Staff

Today's Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox game, featuring two popular players from Japan, was blacked out in Hawai'i.

The game was listed by The Advertiser to be televised by ESPN2. The Oceanic Time Warner Cable Web site also listed the game as being televised.

However, the Fox Sports network had the regional rights to the game. Whenever Fox Sports decides to televise a game, ESPN is prohibited from televising the game.

"It was unfortunately beyond our control," said Lianne Nishimura Killion, Oceanic Time Warner Cable programming manager.

The Mariners won 3-0 behind the one-hitter by Felix Hernandez.

The game, played at Boston, was highly anticipated because of the Fenway Park debut of Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Red Sox were playing the Mariners and their center fielder Ichiro Suzuki.

Suzuki went 0 for 4 against Matsuzaka, who left after seven innings trailing 3-0.

Hernandez had a no-hitter through seven innings. The only hit was a single to center by J.D. Drew to start the eighth.

ESPN2 viewers in Hawai'i instead saw a simulcast of ESPN News.
