Youth symphony offers free concerts

The Hawaii Youth Symphony will stage a free concert at 4 p.m. April 22 at the Pearl City Cultural Center. About 200 musicians from 25 schools on Oahu, Molokai, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island will participate.
The musicians will perform with two of HYS symphony orchestras the Youth Symphony II, directed by Michael Nakasone, and the Concert Orchestra, helmed by Susan Ochi-Onishi with assistant Hannah Watanabe featuring works by Jean Sibelius, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz von Suppe and a movement from Symphony No. 2 by local composer D. Kenji Akemoto.
A world premiere of local 19-year-old composer Michael Foumai's "Poem de Fantasie" will mark the concert debut of the Youth Symphony II. Foumai will conduct.
