It did not take long for the revived Hawaii Winter Baseball to have an alumnus reach the major leagues.

Former Waikiki BeachBoys pitcher Rick Vanden Hurk made his big league debut for the Florida Marlins last night against the Milwaukee Brewers at Dolphins Stadium in Miami.

"We're proud of him," HWB president Hervy Kurisu said.

The game was suspended with the score 2-2 after 10 innings. Vanden Hurk started the game and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run, five hits and three walks, while striking out five. The game will resume today before the regularly scheduled game.

Vanden Hurk is the first from the HWB class of 2006 to play in the majors. In the original HWB that ran from 1993 to 1997, catcher Jorge Fabregas has the distinction of being the first overall. He played for the Honolulu Sharks in 1993 and made his major league debut with the California Angels on April 24, 1994 against Boston.

Vanden Hurk was 2-2 with a 3.60 earned run average for the BeachBoys. In 40 innings pitched, he walked 17 with a league-leading 63 strikeouts.

The native of The Netherlands opened the 2007 season at Double-A Carolina. He has been in the Marlins farm system since 2003.
