Pacific rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn back Hawai'i, 4-3, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.

It was yet another frustrating loss for the Rainbows (24-13) against teams they are supposed to beat. The Tigers (9-25-1) had lost eight of their past nine coming in and were swept in a three-game series by UH in February at Les Murakami Stadium.

"It's pretty obvious to me I've done a terrible job over the last month because we just continue to play with no sense of urgency and I've been unable to get us to do that," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.

The Rainbows had just come off an 8-5 loss to Sacramento State on Saturday in a series they were up 2-0.

Trailing 3-2 yesterday, the Tigers scored twice in the eighth off UH reliever Jayson Kramer. Greg Murray led off with a triple and with the infield drawn in to cut-off the tying run, John Joines walked. Matt Fuson lined out to shortstop to keep the runners at the corners.

Pinch hitter Mike Walker's sacrifice fly to left scored Murray to tie it 3-3. After a passed ball by Kevin Fujii advanced the runner to second, Joines scored on Joe Oliveira's ground single to center. After a single by Zach Chamberlain, Kramer was pulled for Tyler Davis, who struck out Justin Baum to end the inning.

Casey Neimeyer (1-0), who got the final out in the eighth inning, added a scoreless ninth, allowing a two-out walk, before denying the Rainbows a comeback.

Hawai'i took a 2-0 lead in the first against UOP starter Curtis Pasma. Kris Sanchez's two-out RBI single was followed by a wild pitch and error that led to the second run. But the Tigers tied it in the third against Cameron Wheeler, the second of six pitchers used by UH, which planned to staff the game. Oliveira and Chamberlain hit back-to-back doubles for one run and Justin Haar added an RBI single to make it 2-2.

UH regained the lead in the fifth on successive doubles by pinch hitter Jorge Franco and Justin Frash, but the Rainbows never had more than one base runner in each of the next four innings.

Matt Daly started for UH, but used 26 pitches in the first inning after walking the bases loaded and striking out three. Craig Johnson had the longest stint, throwing three scoreless innings after Wheeler's one inning. Jeff Soskin pitched two-thirds of an inning, while Kramer (3-1) took the loss when he allowed the two runs in the eighth. Daly and Davis, who faced just one batter, will be available by Friday's series opener at Fresno State, Trapasso said.

Pasma, who entered the game 0-3 with a 5.67 ERA, went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and eight hits with eight strikeouts.

Freshman Vinnie Catricala, who has started primarily at designated hitter in recent games, started at third base for Frash, who started at DH. It was a dual purpose move to give Catricala some innings on defense and to give Frash time "to clear his head" on defense, Trapasso said.

The Rainbows resume Western Athletic Conference play Friday with a three-game series at Fresno State, which is tied for the league lead with Louisiana Tech at 6-3. Hawai'i is second at 5-4.
