Family of hit-run victim on Big Isle makes Internet plea

By Dave Dondoneau
Advertiser Staff Writer

The family of a pedestrian who was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the Big Island has taken to the Internet to try to find the driver who fled the scene.

The sister of Raymond L Carvalho, who was struck by a vehicle while he was walking north on North Kulani Road at 10:44 p.m. on March 9, has made a plea on Craigslist for anyone with information on the vehicle to contact them or the police.

"I am doing everything that I can to put the word out," said Cheryl Carvalho-Garcia, Raymond's sister, who, along with her parents, lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

Garcia, a preschool teacher, e-mailed her comments to The Advertiser yesterday, saying her family has come up empty in the search for the driver and they are looking for closure.

"My brother moved back to the Big Island nine months ago to be with his children," Garcia wrote. " I am running out of ideas and just don't know what else to do. Even if I flew back home to the Big Island, I wouldn't know where to start looking. I know that someone out there must know something and isn't talking or saying anything or knows that the vehicle is damage but doesn't realize that it's related to my brother's death."

Big Island police said at the time that they believe Carvalho was struck by a Chevrolet that probably now has a damaged right headlight area.

Garcia said family on the Big Island are searching for clues to what happened that night and police have told them a witness said a blue Chevy truck was at the Mountain View Post office during the hour of accident and a male and female were in it.

"Hopefully we can come up with something soon," she wrote. "My dad is very ill. The rest of the family just can't sleep at night. We are haunted by this and just want to find the person who did this. We want to know if it was an accident or done intentionally."

Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call investigating officers at (808) 961-8118 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311. You can also call CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300.

Garcia posted the following information on Craigslist, under the local news section, on Sunday:

March 9th, 2007 Raymond L Carvalho IV was walking North on Kulani Road when he was hit by a blue chevy truck. Raymond was killed instantly. The truck however kept going and never stopped not even to see if Raymond was okay. They never called 911.

I am Raymond's sister. My family and I are trying everything to find the truck that killed my brother. We are trying to find the driver. We are trying to find peace.

If it was an accident and the driver is scared, we understand but we want the person to know that the longer they hide, the worse they are making it for themselves.

Please if anyone out there knows anything, heard anything please call Officer Serrao. If you have a friend who's blue chevy truck is damage on the right side head light, please you don't have to tell anyone who you are. All you need to do is leave a message saying where the truck is. Or email me a message letting me know where the truck is. Or anything else that you know about the accident.

Please help us.

Please email me with any information or call Officer Serrao at 961-8118
