Defaced moped serial number leads to arrest

A 20-year-old Honolulu woman was arrested early this morning in lower Makiki after a police officer found a moped that had been reported stolen being carried in the back of a pickup truck in which she was a passenger.

Police said an on-duty patrol sergeant conducted a traffic stop of the truck and noticed the moped serial number was defaced as he was approaching the driver.

Police said the truck driver told the officer the moped belonged to his passenger. The woman passenger then told the officer she had purchased the moped about a week ago and had been riding it around, police said.

When the woman could not produce any proof of ownership, the officer checked further on the moped and learned it had been reported stolen earlier this month, police said.

They said the moped's registered owner was called to the scene and identified the moped as hers.

At that point the woman in the truck was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

The officer noticed a glass pipe and packets of what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine in plain view in the women's open purse as he was making the arrest and arrested her as well on suspicion of felony drug offenses.

The woman told police her former companion found out where she was staying, came to the home about 10:15 a.m. yesterday, assaulted her and forced her into a van against her will.

She said the woman drove her around throughout the day while assaulting and threatening her. The woman told police she was finally dropped off at a second location later in the day, at which time she noticed her wallet was missing.

The woman called police to report the incident. The van driver was found in Kalihi, identified and arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, second-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree robbery.
