Man injured at building fire in Kapolei subdivision

Advertiser Staff

A man has been taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition after being burned in the shoulder and chest by a fire that broke out in the backyard of a townhome in Kapolei.

EMS spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the 25-year-old man was attempting to douse the flames when he suffered first- and second-degree burns and was taken to Kaiser-Moanalua hospital.

The fire was reported about 10:07 a.m. at an eight-unit complex at 91-1075 Namahoe Place in the A'eloa subdivision of Kapolei. A second alarm was sounded a few minutes later.

A woman who was also in the unit when the fire started told police that she noticed flames in the backyard and the man was injured when he went to fight the fire.

The man suffered blistering in the shoulder and chest area, Police Lt. Frank Pugliese said.

The fire left the ground-floor unit and the one above it with major damage.

A third unit upstairs sustained some damage. A total of seven people, including one child, were displaced.

The fire was extinguished at 10:20 a.m., fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
