New Mexico St. signs San Diego prep hoops standout

Associated Press

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — JayDee Luster, a standout point guard at San Diego's Hoover High School, has signed a letter of intent with New Mexico State.

Luster averaged 23.3 points, 7.7 assists and 7.1 steals a game last season but played in just 11 games after being injured in a car accident. His career totals included 1,890 points, 857 assists and 559 steals.

The 5-foot-9 Luster averaged 19.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.8 steals a game during his high school career. Luster's 559 career steals ranks him third all-time nationally and second all-time in California.

Luster shot just 38.3 percent from the field, 29.6 percent on 3-pointers and 61.7 percent on free throws.

Still, New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus is confident Luster will be a significant player for the Aggies.

''JayDee is a true point guard,'' Theus said. ''He is a very good passer, he will pick up full court, he is very quick and he can get the ball to the open guy as good as anyone. At the same time, he has the ability to knock down the shot when he is left open.''

New Mexico State is a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
