Kaimuki woman wins Miss Aloha Hula

Keonilei Ku'uwehiokala Kaniaupio Fairbanks of Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila won the Miss Aloha Hula title tonight on the opening night of the 44th annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo.

She scored 1,609 points, best in the field of 10 participants.

Fairbanks, of Kaimuki, also won the Hawaiian language award, with 49 points.

Her kahiko dance about O'ahu demi-goddess Mamala was greeted with shrieking approval.

Other top finishers were:

2. Aureana Kamali'io'iwalani Tseu, Hula Halau O Kamuela, 1,527 points.

3. Erica Kau'ionalani Awana, Halau Mohala 'Ilima, 1,512 points.

4. Malia Ann Marks, Halau Hula Olana, 1,501 points.

5. Lewalani Duarte; Keolalaulani Halau 'Olapa O Laka, 1,496 points.
