HFD officials pinpoint causes, damage tied to 5 fires

The Honolulu Fire Department has determined causes, origin, and amount of damage resulting from the following five fires:

  • April 4 — 5:11 a.m., 1222 Honokahua St., Kalama Valley: The fire was caused by an electrical short in an appliance in the dining room. Damage is estimated at $225,000 to the structure and $75,000 to the contents. The fire destroyed the single-family home, displacing a family of four.

  • April 8 — 2:44 p.m., 924 Kahikolu Place, Salt Lake: The fire was caused by a child playing with a lighter in the bedroom. Damage is estimated at $265,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents.

  • April 10 — 12:46 a.m., 99-963A Lalawai Drive, 'Aiea: The fire was determined to be intentionally set. Results of the investigation were turned over to the Honolulu Police Department, which will conduct its own criminal investigation. Damage is estimated at $185,000 to the structure. No damage estimate is available for contents.

  • April 10 — 8:49 a.m., 1655 Makaloa St., Kapiolani Manor: The fire was caused by an unattended candle left burning in the living room. Damage is estimated at $250,000 to the structure and $20,000 to the contents.

  • April 10 — 2:38 p.m., 6913 Niumalu Loop, Mariner's Cove: The fire began in the kitchen and the cause is still under investigation. Damage is estimated at $75,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents.
