Hawai'i Superferry christening tomorrow in Alabama

Associated Press

MOBILE, Ala. — With its sea trials completed, the 349-foot Hawai'i Superferry will be christened tomorrow at Austal shipyard in Mobile, where it was built.

Austal USA officials and representatives from the Hawai'i Superferry company will christen the vessel at the Austal shipyard.

The 900-passenger, 250-car ship was built especially for Hawaiian waters. The four-story vessel is set to begin service from Honolulu in July.

Austal is expected to hand over the vessel to Hawai'i Superferry at the end of the month. It will then make its way to Hawai'i via the Panama Canal in May.

The vessel will operate separate once-daily voyages from O'ahu to both Maui and Kaua'i, with ticket sales beginning next month.
