Advertiser Staff

Kris Sanchez drove in three runs and hit his team-leading eighth home run to help Hawai'i hold off Fresno State, 9-8, tonight to take a 1-0 lead in the Western Athletic Conference baseball series at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbows (25-13 overall, 6-4 WAC) are tied for second in the conference with the Bulldogs (21-19, 6-4), as both trail first-place Lousiana Tech (7-3), a 5-2 winner at Sacramento State.

Mark Rodrigues (7-2) allowed three runs, five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Matt Daly gave up four runs in two-plus innings of relief and Tyler Davis allowed a run in two innings for his third save for UH.

Clayton Allison (6-3) lasted just one-plus innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and two walks.

Sanchez's two-run home run highlighted a five-run second for the Rainbows, who watched the Bulldogs score five of their own in the eighth to pull to within one. But Davis pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.
