Winners of the 8th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry contest will receive awards at ceremonies today starting on O'ahu.

More than 1,300 students entered the contest, which had students write at least two lines by hand on their thoughts on peace.

More than 250 winners will be recognized statewide in separate ceremonies on each island.

Today, O'ahu winners will be named at a ceremony at Mission Memorial Auditorium starting at 12:30 a.m. and running until 2:30 p.m.

The Maui ceremony will be held April 18 at Mayer Tavares Community Center in Pukalina. Kaua'I ceremonies will be April 26 and 27 at Kaua'I intermediate and Kaua'I elementary, respectively.

On May 2, the Big Island ceremony will be held on the UH campus in Hilo Room 301-C.
